The Christmas Eve Busk and Its Lasting Impact on the Fight Against Homelessness

Everyone at Dublin Simon Community is deeply saddened by the passing of Glen Hansard.

For more than 15 years, Glen stood alongside Dublin Simon Community and the people we support. Through his commitment, generosity and willingness to use his platform to shine a light on homelessness, he helped create one of Ireland’s most enduring fundraising traditions: the Christmas Eve Busk.

What began as an impromptu performance on Grafton Street in 2010 grew into an annual event that has united musicians, supporters and members of the public in raising vital funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness. Year after year, Glen brought together artists from across the Irish music community, creating a powerful show of solidarity and support during the festive season.

The impact of that support cannot be overstated. Funds raised through the Christmas Eve Busk have helped Dublin Simon Community provide housing, health services, emergency support and pathways out of homelessness for thousands of people over the years. Just as importantly, the event helped keep the issue of homelessness in the public conversation and encouraged people across Ireland to take action.

Glen’s connection with Dublin Simon Community extended beyond fundraising. He regularly took time to meet with people who had experienced homelessness, ensuring their voices and stories remained at the heart of the campaign. Moments such as inviting Dublin Simon residents to perform alongside musicians during Busk events reflected his belief in inclusion, dignity and community.

As we reflect on his passing, we remember not only the role he played in establishing the Christmas Eve Busk, but the lasting legacy of compassion and commitment that it created. The Busk continues today as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together in support of those without a home.
