Stabilisation Unit

The Stabilisation Unit provides short-term (3–6 weeks) residential support for individuals who are registered as homeless within Dublin County. The service is designed to offer intensive medical, psychiatric, and nursing interventions aimed at stabilising clients with complex needs, removing the barriers to exit homelessness.

Our goal is to provide a stabilising environment where significant improvements in clients’ conditions can be achieved within a 3–6-week admission period.

Service Goals

What We Do

The Stabilisation Unit provides a 3–6 week residential programme for people who are homeless and need structured support with substance or polysubstance use. As a closed, highly supportive unit, it offers a safe space to reduce harmful use, manage withdrawal risks, and prepare for ongoing treatment. Clients seeking support for benzodiazepine- or alcohol-only dependence are redirected to the Detox Unit. Pregnant women may be admitted with coordinated maternity care.

Admission Criteria

Those currently homeless and registered with Dublin City or Dublin County local authority who are willing and motivate to engage in group therapies, structured supports and collaborative healthcare planning throughout the stabilization process. Are clinically suitable for a Harm Reduction approach, as confirmed by the referring doctor or prescribing clinician. Clients who are opioid dependent must be established on an appropriate Opiate Agonist Treatment (OAT) regimen prior to admission to ensure safe and effective management of withdrawal symptoms. Arrangements need to be made if tapering dose is necessary. Clients seeking a standalone benzodiazepine and/or alcohol detoxification will be redirected to the Detox unit referral process.
