Stabilisation Unit

The Stabilisation Unit provides short-term (3–6 weeks) residential support for individuals who are registered as homeless within Dublin County. The service is designed to offer intensive medical, psychiatric, and nursing interventions aimed at stabilising clients with complex needs, removing the barriers to exit homelessness.

Our goal is to provide a stabilising environment where significant improvements in clients’ conditions can be achieved within a 3–6-week admission period.

Service Goals

Service Role

The service is designed to offer intensive medical, psychiatric, and nursing interventions aimed at stabilising clients with complex needs. During the first three days of admission, clients are accompanied on all outings from the unit to ensure their safety and provide appropriate support. This expectation is communicated in advance and should be discussed with the client prior to admission.

Admission

Admission is focused on those requiring effective management of chronic health conditions, medication support for Axis I psychiatric diagnoses, and/or assistance in achieving or maintaining a healthy weight—particularly in cases of acute malnutrition or substance-related weight loss. The unit also prioritises facilitating attendance at medical appointments and preventing health deterioration that could lead to hospital admission.

Harm Reduction Model

We adopt a Harm Reduction and Reduce the Use approach and are equipped to support individuals actively engaged in chaotic poly-substance use. While abstinence is not required, clients must be willing to reduce use in order to benefit from the stabilising environment and healthcare supports provided. Admission is contingent on our ability to safely manage any potential drug withdrawal symptoms. As such, individuals who are opiate-dependent must be engaged in Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) prior to admission.
