Detoxification Unit

Our aim of our Homeless Specific Short-term Addiction Treatment (Alcohol/Benzodiazepine Detox) is to provide a safe, supportive, medically assisted alcohol/benzodiazepine detoxification to facilitate adults in addressing their addiction and initiating the process of recovery.

The Detoxification Unit makes up one of the core services located in our dedicated homeless-specific Health and Addiction Care Facility at Usher’s Island.

What We Do

The Detox unit has a capacity of 11 beds. We work with clients who are addicted to either alcohol or benzodiazepines, and tailor the medical intervention to the client’s needs dependent on their addiction. It is a low threshold service targeted specifically at adults who are homeless and meet the criteria for admission.

Duration of Programme

The programme is of three to five weeks duration. We use the modalities of the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support clients as they go through the detox and initiate their journey to recovery.

Group Programme

A daily group programme is facilitated by the key worker. In addition, wraparound supports are provided, such as one-to-one counselling, health and wellbeing, literacy, personal development.

Low Threshold

Low threshold means there is no cut off point on methadone maintenance, but urine should be clear of opiods. Due to the nature of a low threshold service we tend to work with those people often excluded from services due to medication management, poly substance misuse and associated behavioural issues. Clients are allowed to leave the programme for restricted times after the first week within the unit. As a team we work closely with clients to support both their medical and social needs while in the unit, in an attempt to help them to achieve their goals.

The Detoxification Unit team consists of a Clinical Nurse Manager , Visiting GP, Nurses, Project Workers and Support workers.
There is a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day who will support clients with their physical health needs and to manage their withdrawals safely. The project worker will provide case management support in liaison with the referral agent.
A daily group programme facilitated by the key worker.
Wraparound supports are provided, such as one-to-one counselling, health and wellbeing, literacy, personal development.
The process is guided by the Clinical Governance for Quality and Safety framework.
Eligibility Criteria

Individuals aged 18 years and above.

· Clients registered as homeless with Dublin City or Dublin County local authority.

· Clients at risk of homelessness who have been recently housed and have a keyworker with Housing First or Tenancy Sustainment Services in the Dublin City and Dublin County area.

· Clients on methadone are accepted – please see further information on the referral form.

· Urine should be free of opiates on admission.

Referrals

Referrals can only be made by Any person working with people living in homelessness.  The referral however must be signed off by a GP to confirm that the client is medically fit to undertake a medical detox.
