At a photocall today by the Grand Canal in Dublin’s Portobello, travel writer John Mulligan and RTÉ weather presenter Karina Buckley helped to launch the Coast to Coast Challenge for Dublin Simon Community.
The charity, which works hard to help people who are homeless, is organising a coast to coast walk from Dublin to Newport in county Mayo from 8th-17th September along a route taking in many of Ireland’s inland waterways, with all funds raised going towards the vital services provided by the organisation.
The inspiration for the walk comes from the story of the Flannerys, four young men who left their family’s smallholding in county Sligo in 1862 and set off to Dublin by foot in search of a better life. This was the first part of an amazing journey which eventually saw them ending up in New Zealand.
John Mulligan, who is leading the walk for Dublin Simon, is descended from those same men, and recently recreated the walk, writing a book, Following in the Footsteps of the Four Famous Flannerys based on his experiences of the journey and the lives of his remarkable ancestors.
John and Dublin Simon are looking for people to join the walk to help raise funds for the charity, and anyone interested in taking part can call 01 671 5551 or email fundraising@dubsimon.ie
Dublin Simon Community offers 13 services throughout the stages of homelessness. These range from emergency and treatment to supported housing and settlement. » »
