Hikes Newsletter February 2008

Harry Keogh here from Dublin Simon Community, I wanted to drop you a quick note about two very exciting hikes we have planned for 2008.

Everest in Ireland

30th May – 7th June
New for 2008, Everest in Ireland is the ultimate hill walking challenge. Dublin Simon will take a group of hill walkers to new heights by scaling the equivalent height of Everest (29,028 feet) in Ireland. This adventure takes in some of the most breathtaking and beautiful hill walks in Ireland and indeed the world over a nine day period. The hike begins on Slieve Donard in Co. Down, takes in the Glover Walk and Mount Errigal in Donegal, the Twelve Pins in Galway and finishes up on the Macgillycuddy Reeks in Killarney Co. Kerry.

Hike Patagonia 2008 - November 9th to 18th

November 8th - 18th
Los Glaciers National Park, covering more than 6000 square kilometers of southern Argentina, offers a remarkable combination of breathtaking glaciers, huge mountain ranges, vast emerald green lakes and rare plants and animals. The major attraction of the Park is without doubt the mountain range on the northwest shores of Lago Viedma, which includes the granite pinnacles of Mount Fitzroy (3405m) and Cerro Torre (3128m). Our 10 day trek will be both magical and challenging, but above all rewarding in the sense of helping with our city’s homeless.

Mount Fitzroy takes its name from Robert Fitzroy, the captain of the Beagle, but the Araucanian Indian tribes that once roamed Patagonia called it Cerro Chalten, which means ‘smoking mountain’, because of its almost permanent veil of self-created mist.

Achieving this challenge is possible – all you have to do is be willing to go for it. You don’t need to be super fit or have an abundance of experience, but we would recommend some training before you set off. People who have hiked for Dublin Simon have said it was the best experience of their whole life.
